I would like to gamble and buy hearing aid for my Dad. I have no idea what kind of hearing loss he's got as he's never been to a doctor (he's 72) to be tested - and there is no chance to take him there. Sad He lives in Belarus, i'm going there in summer for a short visit. Have spoken to my sister and she said he's gone almost deaf. He doesn't want to go to the doctor's. Sad

I searched hearing aid on ebay (pease don't laugh) and there are quite a few items there. I stopped my eyes on RECHARGEABLE HEARING AID/ DIGITAL/ AMPLIFIER/ DEVICE and ready to buy it...

Would it work?  Huh I have no one who is using hearing aid to ask for advice so all thoughts are appreciated. Is it a pointless idea or could that gamble pay off?

Is it possible to help someone without them being tested? I remember i received a leaflet offering a freebie hearing aid but when i phoned there, they said i couldn't get it for someone else who is not living here. So basically i'm stuck with something i can buy on ebay unless someone can advise another option. I wouldn't like to pay much in case it doesn't work.  Smiley

Hi

Hearing aids in the UK can only be supplied and fitted by qualified Hearing Aid Audiologists. It is actually a criminal offence to supply a hearing aid without being qualified and registered. Ebay is a grey area as fitting a hearing aid without a hearing test or being correctly adjusted/programmed could damage the hearing further. My other concern in your fathers case is that if the hearing is getting rapidly worse he should seek medical advice. Let us know how you get on...

Thanks very much for your answer, i'm absolutely ignorant in this sphere and needed to hear someone with knowledge. I don't want to worsen his condition. Will refrain from buying the aid on ebay - i wasn't sure if that would help, but since it can make things worse, it's definitely not acceptable.

I will only be in Belarus for a week so not likely to get him to the doc. The biggest problem with my dad is that he is not willing to go anywhere due to his sore feet.. and seeing a doc would involve a lengthy trip to the capital with lots of walking and public transport (and not a signle visit i suppose). That's what my sister told me on the phone as they already tried to convince him to go to the doctors. He just says he will die as he is.  Undecided Stubborn old people.
