Swiss hearing aid firm Sonova Holding AG said Wednesday it is buying U.S.-based InSound Medical Inc. for $75 million.
Sonova said the deal would add a new type of extended wear hearing aid developed by InSound to its portfolio.

Marketed under the Lyric brand, InSound's hearing aids sit deep in the ear canal for months at a time and are virtually invisible from the outside. The company is currently testing a new model that could withstand three swims a week.

InSound is a privately held company based in Newark, California, with sales of some $5 million in 2009, Sonova said.

The Swiss company that also owns Unitron and Phonak recently completed a $489 million takeover of California-based cochlear implant maker Advanced Bionics Corp.
